Weekly Report #1_2023_04_16

The first weekly report of 2023, and also my first weekly report (literally, I have never written a weekly report since I started working, grateful for being part of a relatively free team).

Learning#

English#

  • Continue memorizing vocabulary, aiming for 50 new words per day along with reviewing using the "Don't Memorize Words" app.

Technology#

  • Continue reading the book "Ginkgo" to establish a solid foundation. It's important to not forget what I have learned. I finished reading Chapter 4 this week.
  • Starting to learn Rust again. This time it feels much easier, probably because of the previous attempts. Rust is quite interesting, and I am mainly learning through the Rust Bible. I completed about 2/3 of the introductory chapters this week, and I believe I can finish the rest next week.
  • Practice coding problems. None this week. I was not in the best state of mind and ended up focusing on Rust, which I found more interesting. However, considering that coding problems are still an important part of interviews and I personally don't dislike them, I will keep this reminder.
  • Open source projects. None this week. I will keep this reminder until I am capable of contributing to open source projects.

Work#

  • I will soon be entering a relatively new field. The feedback I received from my work over the past year has been good, and I hope to succeed in this new field as well.
  • I am still working on resolving issues, wrapping up, and promoting my previous work. I hope I won't encounter too many problems.

Life#

  • This week was uneventful, as I have been dealing with a stuffy nose which affected my overall well-being. Health is everything.
  • History: Continuing to read "A Penguin History of Europe: Pursuit of Glory: Europe 1648-1815."
  • Recreation: Rewatching "Silicon Valley," but haven't finished yet. I wish I could be as successful as Richard. Before bed, I will read a bit of "The Lord of Mysteries."
  • Behavioral practice: Reread Chapter 1 of "Fogg Behavior Model."
  • Planning to research investments, but haven't started yet. After almost two years of work, I have saved up some money. The average interest rate of the money market funds I currently hold is above 2%. With the effort put into research, I believe I can achieve a return rate of at least 5% on small amounts without taking too much risk. Considering that I need some liquid assets for unforeseen circumstances (and impulsive spending), a 3% difference in return rate would bring an additional income of 12,000 yuan per year, while also accumulating experience for future financial management. It is worth spending two weekends to study this systematically.

Some Thoughts#

Recently, I have been thinking about the purpose of work and summarized it hierarchically as follows:

  • Obtain cash flow.
  • Gain practical application of technology.
  • Make connections with excellent friends.
  • Learn new technologies.

It is also the performance evaluation season for some companies. Some friends may have good performance while others may not, but it doesn't matter. Performance evaluation is just a management tool. What matters is whether you are responsible for yourself. For friends with good performance, there is no need to say anything. However, I also know friends who have not performed well and after discussing with me, they had these thoughts:

Poor performance but agree with the performance evaluation system: Make improvements according to the requirements of the evaluation. If you cannot meet the performance requirements, it means that you are not suitable for the environment or there is a lack of opportunities. Try to find a more suitable job. If you can meet the requirements, then just keep moving on.

Poor performance and disagree with the performance evaluation system: Don't give a care. Focus more on yourself (lower the priority of work output) and find a more suitable job. If you don't agree, there is no need to struggle or try to prove anything. Think about the purpose of work. In reality, the impact of one performance evaluation is probably only a month or two of performance bonus, right?
